But it seems Dakota’s not the only one who wants to make Tessa his own…She may be the Dollmaker’s next target, but Tessa has no intention of winding up as another toy on his shelf. Can she and Dakota stop this ghastly killer before his next deadly playdate?Book The Dollmaker (Forgotten Files Book 2) Review :
An agent devoted to his job. A medical examiner focused on the task. Both destined to find resolution and understanding in finding closure. With the killer’s identity somewhat revealed Mary Burton allows the reader to focus on the investigation process. The process included profiling the killer and being able to study mannerisms and body language. Reopening an unsolved case from the past is a nice addition to the current case by retesting DNA using current technology. Sharp having the ability to slip into the psyche of a killer was clever.Chained to the past, Sharp is intent on getting justice for his sister death, before more victims surface.Agent Sharp works on solving an unsolved case from his past while a killer is leaving behind dolls and opening up old wounds. Sharp is obsessed with this investigation putting all his efforts into finding the killer. At times it means pushing his personal desires aside. While this book had no pictures to illustrate the horrifying images of the Dollmaker, the words used to create these images sent chills down my spine. This was a chilling and creepy story.Second chances come about when Tessa and Sharp work the same case. It’s not easy to bridge the gap when the past clings to them and a killer is targeting friends.A little romance and a whole lot of investigative foot work. I found I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. THE DOLLMAKER is book 2 in Mary Burton's "Forgotten Files" but can also be read as a standalone, though Dakota first appeared in "The Shark" and the couple from that story do pop up in this one. Dakota Sharp is man who carries guilt and grief heavily on his shoulders. He's a good example of the term "still waters run deep" and although he's emotionally closed off, its obvious he cares deeply for victims and their families. His estranged wife Tessa was a wonderful counterpart for him and in the end was his saving grace I think. I loved her spirit, determination, and the fact that she wouldn't give up on Sharp or their marriage. The killer they are after was creepy and the manner in which he's turning women into real life dolls was chilling in the extreme.Once again Ms. Burton has written an engrossing mystery, although the killer wasn't hard to figure out. There were twists and turns however and plenty of suspense, as well as a lovely connection between Sharp and Tessa. I was surprised by the couple of love scenes thrown in which were pretty passionate, since Burton usually only has a quick one. I thought the ending was a bit rushed and everything was wrapped up too quickly, but I still really enjoyed it. I also loved the epilogue which left me with tears in my eyes. Some new characters were even introduced and though I know Julia Vargas' book is next, I hope Andrews of Shield Security and Sharp's friend McLean will get theirs too. Overall just a well written and engaging read and one I'd recommend!
