Ebook About St Patrick's Day, New York City. Everyone is celebrating but everyone is in for the shock of his life. Born into the heat and hatred of the Northern Ireland conflict, IRA man Brian Flynn has masterminded a brilliant terrorist act - the seizure of Saint Patrick's Cathedral. Among his hostages: the woman Brian Flynn once loved, a former terrorist turned peace activist. Among his enemies: an Irish-American police lieutenant fighting against a traitor inside his own ranks and a shadowy British intelligence officer pursuing his own cynical, bloody plan. The cops face a booby-trapped, perfectly laid out killing zone inside the church. The hostages face death. Flynn faces his own demons, in an electrifying duel of nerves, honor and betrayal...Book Cathedral Review :
Although this is not my favorite Nelson DeMille book (and I have now read all of them), it is so beautifully written that I have to give it five stars. Typical of DeMille, the characters are so completely and deeply developed that they almost walk off of the page. The story was so skillfully told that I could follow every detail and my heart broke for some of the characters on BOTH sides. Some reviewers complained that there were too many characters. I disagree in that such an operation/exercise/incident would summon up every politician on both sides of the Atlantic who was able to hold a press conference and a smile. It would require the services of NYPD, National Guard and any other military organization able to stand upright and wield a weapon. Because of the significance of St. Patrick's Cathedral, it is not surprising that there were so many Catholic Clergy involved. No, there were not too many characters - even the innocent bystanders, lookey-loos on rooftops and hanging out of window were important to the story.Other reviewers thought it was too long. Perhaps it was and the story dragged at some points, but this was a complex operation with layers upon layers of history between the participants. That history was so deftly woven into the story with just a touch of the Irish magic (Father Donnelly, Whitehorn Abbey and the ring) that it took a lot of pages to tell it.My advice to readers is that Nelson DeMille is one of the most gifted writers I have ever read but don't start with this book. Begin with The Gold Coast and the Gatehouse and go forward from there. I cannot believe all the bad reviews on this book. I found it mysterious, thrilling, scary, interesting and I could literally picture everything that was going on so easily (because of the wonderful writing). Loved the jaded NY cop, the IRA fella, the extremist and the rest of the cast and crew. I can't believe some people described it as boring - I just don't get that. I had read the book, loved it and the only thing I could find at the time was a disappointing abridged audio version that was read like someone speed reading a phone book. I was delighted to see that an unabridged, Scott Brick version is now available (its been a few years since I read the book). I've read all of the John Corey books and I think this book is just as good. I know it gave me the shivers a few times (and the atmosphere) and its a rare book that can do that. So take a chance and read this one, I think its worth it.
